The UNM Department of Anthropology invites applications for a probationary tenure-track faculty position in linguistic anthropology of the Americas in the Ethnology subfield, at the level of Assistant Professor to work in a highly diverse and inclusive university.  We seek a scholar who will complement a three-subfield department (including archaeology and evolutionary anthropology) with national recognition for scholarship and graduate fieldwork training.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Earned PhD in either linguistic or sociocultural anthropology, with training in the anthropology of Native America

2. Research addresses language and communicative practice. 

3. Ethnographic research focus in the Americas 

 Preferred Qualifications

1. Evidence that the candidate’s research is ethnographically based and historically informed in the study of communicative practices through which people address central matters of sociopolitical concern.

2. Evidence that the candidate’s research focuses upon how local language communities are continually constructed within wider political-economic complexes.

3. Evidence that the candidate’s research focuses upon language understood as the central semiotic medium through which cultural processes are enacted and language understood as the vehicle through which reference and predication is achieved.

4.Demonstrated conversancy with theory and methodology in both linguistic and sociocultural anthropology

5.Demonstrated ability to effectively teach core courses in linguistic anthropology as an integral part of a program in sociocultural anthropology.

6.Evidence of peer-reviewed publications and recent presentations of ongoing work that shows research productivity involving ethnographic work.

7.Demonstrated planned and/or on-going extramurally funded research program that supports an active anthropological field research program.

8.Demonstrated ability to collaborate in integrative interdisciplinary research and expertise that will complement existing strengths at UNM.

9.Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, and well as working with broadly diverse communities.
